Bluebonnet Sonnet

(What love song will you offer?)

Are you on your way?

A new way, I mean.

How do you feel when that lovin’ feeling ain’t around?

On this Saturday in spring, I was on my way to get a haircut.

I really needed it.

This new neighborhood however was new to me.

Would I like what I see?

But there she is, these Texas bluebonnets – greeting me.

In the midst of evil, depravity, chaos and social disconnectivity, there is beauty.

But to notice beauty, you gotta look.

Really look.

Or you might just miss it.

Recently I came across a Bill Moyer’s documentary courtesy of a Jungian analyst.

“Facing evil” was what it was called.

It’s not an inviting title.

This blog entry came about as a result of learning a few things there, one of which a poem by Spanish American poet, George Santayana.

His first line of Sonnet XXV, written in the decade of 1883-1893, got my attention.

“As in the midst of battle there is room For thoughts of love ..”

Sonnet XXV

If your were to write your sonnet, what would yours read?

This is not an English class but the gist is this:

The structure of a sonnet is defined by 14 lines in a rhythmic pattern of 10 syllables per line.

Volta (meaning “turn” in Italian) happens in line 9.

You bear witness in the lines prior and at line 9, you make your turn – your resolution.

It’s you taking us on a journey.

Where will you take us?

Here’s mine.  I hope you find it useful for your growth and reflection.

Oh hello sweet dear! When did we first meet?

Was it ninety-five? The year I came here.

Some thirty years later, no longer strange.

You, the people, the music and your twang

The Sunday crawfish & bbq sauce.

The way you think church is the only way.

Thought myself lost – so I learned and saw.

Only to see, though pretty, you no clue.

Do I play ball? Or do I okay weed?

In my bones I am sure there’s so much more

Bluebonnet, bluebonnet, oh pretty one

Come on now, come whisper & do your smile

You can tell me – we are friends now, aren’t we?

Tell me we all belong here and can thrive.
